We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song

As part of Black History month, my students and I have learned about several notable black Canadian musicians - Portia White, Oscar Peterson and Measha Brueggergosman.

As we talked about these outstanding people and listened to their music, we also learned about their roots. As we uncovered some of the truths of their experiences it led us to discussions around equality.

I took the opportunity to read/sing the book "We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song" by Debbie Levy and beautifully illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton.

The text weaves the lyrics of this well known civil rights anthem with the major events in American history from its roots in slavery to the present day. How impactful and important "We Shall Overcome" is as an anthem of hope.
