The Gift of Music

These last two weeks I have received the most wonderful gift – the gift of making music with others. I just finished teaching a two lesson online sampler called Celebrate the Season. I had the privilege to meet many new families and reacquaint with some I haven’t seen for a while. Together, through music, we celebrated the many diverse traditions of the holidays. How delightful it was to watch the children take part in our lessons. Everyone loved playing home made percussion instruments as we sang African songs for Kwanzaa or French carols like “Noël Nouvelet”. Scarves in hand, we danced along with the Sugar Plum Fairies and galloped with the horses of Sleigh Ride. Our imaginations came along for the ride as rode our toboggans down the slippery slopes, twirled like spinning dreidels or pretended we were the “Little Drummer Boy”.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if online Early Childhood music classes would be successful. But indeed, it is possible to make music in this way and to create opportunities for meaningful connections with children and their families. I am so excited to continue on this journey! Starting January 7 and 9, I will be teaching a seven week winter session for infants to grade 2. Give your child the gift of music this year!
