Cultural Diversity in Children's Book: Wheels on the Tuk Tuk

Sharing “singing books” is a wonderful way to engage preschoolers in singing while developing literacy skills.  Additionally, I am always on the lookout for books that open children’s minds to broader world views.  “Wheels on the Tuk Tuk” by Kabir Sehgal and Surishtha Sehgal is one such shining example.

The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk

In this singing book, based on the well known “Wheels on the Bus” melody, preschoolers  discover aspects of Indian culture. The children can learn about the “tuk tuk”, a common form of transportation or how to greet one another respectfully with “Namaste- ji”  The book includes a glossary of the vocabulary which is so helpful in providing context for our conversations.
